Front Desk: Meghan Markle Stayed Here
Last November, Nate and I had the chance to stay at the Cliveden House during our UK vacation. The property, located in the English countryside but not far from Heathrow, has been on the map as of late; Meghan Markle stayed here on the eve of her wedding.
It’s easy to see why the place is a choice for royalty—it’s straight out of an episode of Downton Abbey with massive grounds, owned by the National Trust. We arrived at lunchtime and took a spin around the gardens, then sat down for afternoon tea. The service is held in the Great Hall, set with white tablecloths and the prettiest china. It’s formal, but not-at-all fussy, and I loved that the tiny sandwiches and cakes can be served with a big cocktail.
We stayed in a Mansion House Deluxe Suite, which was so pretty and spacious and velvety—it even had a working fireplace. I’m not sure about you, but if I’m in the presence of a fireplace, I hope it’s lit—even in the summertime. It feels so cozy and fancy. The room also had an incredible marble bathtub.
During our two-night stay, my favorite part of the property was the spa—and I didn’t even have a treatment. Guests at the hotel are free to use the facilities, which includes an outdoor swimming pool (way too cold for us, but a few brave guests were jumping in), that’s said to be the last remaining outdoor pool in England. We soaked in the outdoor hot tubs, instead. We also used the a big indoor pool and hot tub, surrounded by comfy loungers where you can read a magazine or fall asleep.
As much as we love to explore a city, it’s always fun to find a hotel where you’re just kind of forced to stay put and enjoy the amenities—just like Meghan Markle.
